Keanae Peninsula on Maui is one of Hawai`i's prime areas for the production of kalo (taro), the staple of the Hawaiian diet and the elder brother to the Kanaka Maoli people. The lo`i (fields or terraces), maintained from ancient times, can be seen here in various stages of production. For more information, please visit the kalo page in our Canoe Plants of Ancient Hawai`i feature.
